Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber swept to victory at the MTV European Music Awards collecting two prizes apiece in a ceremony that paid tribute to late musician Prince.
Gaga took home best female and best look whilst Bieber beat Hello singer Adele to best song for hit track Sorry at the awards show in Rotterdam.
The Canadian singer also won best fans – the third year in a row he has collected the prize.
However Bieber lost out to social media star turned heartthrob Shawn Mendes in the best male category whilst Dutch DJ Martin Garrix also had a successful evening, collecting two awards.
The 20-year-old, who launched his own record label earlier this year, won best electro act and best world stage seeing off Brits Tinie Tempah, Ellie Goulding and Duran Duran.
Despite being nominated for three awards including Best Female, Adele left empty handed although British success came from Coldplay who picked up the Best Rock award.
During the ceremony host Bebe Rexha revealed the EMA trophies had been turned purple in memory of pop superstar Prince.
The Purple Rain singer died in April after being found collapsed in a lift at his home in Minnesota, United States. X Factor winners Little Mix capped a successful couple of months following the release of their new album, beating former One Direction member Zayn (Malik), Adele, Coldplay and Years And Years to take home the Best UK and Ireland Act award.
Beyonce – who was nominated in five categories but failed to win any awards – was beaten to best video by The Weeknd for Starboy which features Daft Punk.
Drake was named best hip hop act whilst American rock stalwarts Green Day were handed the global icon prize for their contribution to music.
Collecting their award, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said it was “really nice to be in Europe right now”.
He said: “It’s nice to be out of America just for a second because of this horrendous election that’s going on right now.
“Our entire country is about to have one big collective heart attack.”
He then told fans to “stay sexy” before the group performed their classic hit American Idiot.
