1 Killed High Wind Cause Fatal Accident On Alligator River Bridge

TYRRELL COUNTY – One person has died after a tractor trailer overturned on the Alligator River Bridge.

The Tyrell County 911 Center received a call at 9:42am Saturday for reports of an overturned truck.

Upon arrival, the driver of the tractor trailer was pronounced dead at the scene.

At approximately 12:00pm, Highway Patrol responded to a second overturned tractor trailer. That accident occurred on the Virginia Dare Bridge.

The Highway Patrol is investigating. NCDOT has closed both bridges until further notice.

Drivers are urged to use other routes, including the Wright Memorial Bridge, the Herbert Bonner Bridge, the Washington Baum Bridge, and the Old Manns Harbor Bridge, all of which remain open.

According to Tyrell County Sheriffs Office and NC Highway Patrol, the bridge tender on the Alligator River Bridge reported a wind gust of 116 mph, which was recorded on the bridge at 6:39am Saturday morning.

High winds are still being reported in Dare County, and authorities urge motorists to use caution if attempting to cross any bridges.
