Naya Rivera Files For Divorce From Ryan Dorsey After 2 Years Marriage

Naya Rivera has filed for divorce from husband Ryan Dorsey.

“After much consideration, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” the former couple tell in a statement. “Our priority is and always will be our beautiful son that we share together. We will continue to be great co-parenting partners for him. We ask for respect and privacy for our family during this difficult time.”

The former Glee star submitted documents last week to end the couples’ marriage of just over two years, TMZ reports.

According to the site, Rivera is asking for primary physical custody of their 1-year-old son Josey with visitation rights for Dorsey.

Rivera wed Dorsey in July 2014 just three months after her engagement to rapper Big Sean was called off.

“The media eschewed it into this whole thing,” Rivera told PEOPLE in September after she was accused of “switching grooms.”

In reality, Rivera, 29, and Dorsey, 33, had been friends for years and dated during her early days on Glee.

“To this day, I’ll be doing interviews and people will be, like, ‘Oh my God! Y’all were friends?’ ” Rivera said of the media believing her relationship with Dorsey had been solely platonic before their engagement. “I’m, like, ‘What are you talking about?’ ”

The two had dated in 2010, but she ended the relationship to commit herself more fully to her career. A few weeks after the split, Rivera found out she was pregnant with Dorsey’s child. Ultimately, she decided to terminate the pregnancy but never informed Dorsey. The two were not in contact until Dorsey reached out with condolences about her broken engagement.

“When I made that decision [to have an abortion], I made it by myself, as I feel is the case for a lot of women, and I did not share it with Ryan at the time,” said Rivera, who chronicles her relationship with Dorsey in her memoir Sorry Not Sorry. “By the time we sort of reconnected, I was like, gosh, there’s a reason why you keep coming back in my life and we keep coming back together. It was like, ‘I have to tell you something.’ ”

“He said, ‘In the short time that we dated, I wish that I could have done something to make you feel like you could have trusted me with that information because I would have loved to have been there with you,’ ” Rivera continued. “I think it was the kindest, best thing that any man could have ever said in that situation,” she said during the interview. “It just made me love him that much more.”
