Yahoo said on Thursday information associated with at least 500 million user accounts was stolen from its network in 2014 by what he believed was a “state-sponsored agent.”
The stolen data may have included the names, email addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth and hash passwords but may have included unprotected passwords, payment card or bank account information, according to the company.
“The investigation has found no evidence that the actor sponsored by the state is currently in the Yahoo network,” the company said.
Yahoo said it was working with law enforcement on the matter.
It was reported in early August that a hacker by the name of Peace went on sale a cache of 200 million account credentials stolen Yahoo user. Yahoo had then said it was investigating the situation.
The hacker had listed an ad on the market TheRealDeal claim that about 200 million accounts Yahoo are on sale for three bitcoins (about Rs. 1,07,000). The data includes user names, passwords, personal information and other user decrypted email addresses.
Court confirmation comes right near the completion of the acquisition of Verizon’s main business of Yahoo for $ 4.83 billion (about Rs. 32,500 crore). Yahoo will launch in Verizon AOL operations. Verizon said on Thursday it was notified of the breach in the past two days.
“We will evaluate as research continues through the lens of the general interests of Verizon … Until then, we are unable to comment further,” the company said.
