Tropical Storm Julia formed just west of Jacksonville around 10 p.m. Tuesday. Maximum sustained winds are 40 mph are expected heavy rains and bands of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. all the way to Altamaha Sound, Ga.
From 2 a.m. the storm was centered 15 miles north-northwest of Jacksonville and about 50 miles south-southwest of Brunswick, Ga. Most of the rain and the wind is east of the center of circulation.
The National Weather Service has extended flood warnings past 4 a.m. for Glynn County.
It is expected that heavy rain along coastal areas on Wednesday as Julia moves over our area to the north-northwest at a speed of 8 mph. Most Duval County has seen the worst time Julia. It will address the Fernandina Beach area at 3 a.m. and through Jekyll Island for 5 a.m.
High tide is right around 7:30 in the morning so coming ashore with winds that help create a normal high tide with storm surge potential of 1-2 ‘.
Julia is expected to produce 3-6 inches of rain near the coasts of Florida and Georgia NE and SE isolated Total 10 inches are possible. An isolated tornado is also a possibility.
The National Weather Service says high winds along coastal areas are expected as well and we have had a gust of 51 mph reported in Huguenot Park and 46 mph gust Pier Jacksonville Beach.
A First Coast News viewer in Yulee recorded a gust of wind 61 mph.
St. Simons Island set a record of 4.43 inches recording rainfall Tuesday, easily beating the previous record of 2.03 inches, according to the National Weather Service.
Downtown Jacksonville and Fernandina Beach can expect winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, the National Weather Service reports.
