In case you’ve been living under a rock, EastEnders‘ new boss Sean O’Connor is axing sisters Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell – and Rita Simons, who plays Roxy, has now said that it was like “being given a kick”.
Speaking to The Sun, she said: “When Sean brought the idea to me, it was like I knew I was being given a kick, I knew I needed to do it, and I’m a big believer in the universe guiding you to where you need to go.
“Obviously I knew that I couldn’t stay there forever, and I didn’t want to stay there forever. The problem is, because I love everyone so much there and it’s such a family environment, you get very used to being there.”
She added: “I know in my heart of hearts it’s the right thing to do. I needed to get out. I needed to spread my wings. But because they’re like my family there, you don’t want to leave them.”
Samantha Womack, who plays her on-screen sister Ronnie in the soap, recently spoke out about the decision to write out the characters, saying it’s a really “strange time” for her.
Speaking about her co-star Rita, she explained: “I’ve probably spent more time with that one individual than I have with any of my family working together 14 hours away, and we’ve never had an argument.”
Details on the siblings’ departure are being kept tightly under wraps for the time being, although it’s strongly suspected that they will be killed off.
Ronnie has had her fair share of drama over the years, having killed her father, lost two babies tragically and found herself locked-up for kidnapping.
And it seems the character’s much-hyped demise will follow this trend, with Ronnie set to drown in her wedding dress.
The unlucky soap siren will reportedly meet her end on her big day after she finds her sister Roxy dead in a swimming pool.
It’s rumoured that the sisters will meet their grisly end together in the New Year, after drowning in a swimming pool following Ronnie’s wedding to Jack Branning – a fate that looks more likely considering the nature of these pictures snapped during filming of the soap earlier this month.
But EastEnders has revealed it’s filming multiple endings for Roxy and Ronnie – so this might just be one of many different scenarios in the mix.
