Marvel and Square Enix just pulled the rug out from under the entire video game community, as they announced a partnership that will result in a series of Avengers video games.
The studio that brought Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts to life has paired with Marvel comics to bring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to a console near you.
The announcement came in the form of a small trailer, which teased a broken and defeated Avengers team. The teaser was titled ‘Reassembled” implying that the team has already fallen from grace, and someone is trying to bring the battered heroes back together.
In the press release from Square Enix, the studio revealed another small hint about the plot for the new series.
“The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise. Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come.”
The line to focus on here is “completely original story”. That means that the Avengers games will not follow any storyline from the existing comics or films. There won’t be an existing plot that fans will kow or recognize, so everything about the game will be a total surprise.
It may be a whie before this new Avengers franchise is ready to hit the shelves, but it seems like the games will be well worth the wait.
