After the massive fan backlash against the How I Met Your Mother finale, producers promised an alternate ending on the upcoming Season 9 DVD. It appears that ending has leaked online, and it shows a much happier life for Ted (Josh Radnor) and The Mother (Cristin Milioti).
“If you didn’t like the finale, I guess that happens,” HIMYM producer Carter Bays tweeted in April. “We tried something and it didn’t connect with you. I hope we’re still friends. … We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series. We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too. We’re going to include that version on the Complete Series DVD as an alternate finale to How I Met Your Mother.”
In case you managed to suppress the HIMYM finale from your mind over the past few months, the sitcom ended with The Mother dying of an unknown illness. Ted’s children (Lyndsy Fonseca and David Henrie) then figured out that he was telling them the story of how he met their mother as a way to ask them permission to date Robin (Cobie Smulders).
Robin, meanwhile, was divorced from Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), even though the entire final season of HIMYM was focused on this unlikely coupling. This left Ted free to court Robin once again, and the finale concluded with him bringing her the famous blue French horn.
